Demoing or ‘Try before you buy’ is the absolute best way to know that you’re getting the right gear. There are some shops in town which offer many of the same brands and models for rent and for sale. You can rent skis/snowboard, change it each day (to try different ones) and the shop will subtract up to two days of your rental price off of the purchase price of the new gear. Many of our campers do this. There are also Demo centers on each mountain top where you can try lots to brands and styles which they sell new in the shops in town.
